Opinion: Laguna
Through out the game, there are many instances in which it is heavily indicated that Laguna Loire is, in fact, Squall's father. It is never actually stated, however, leaving much room for speculation from fans. I'd like to start by saying that I love stuff like this. I always find the backstories of my favourite games to be particularly fascinating, and never fail to read up on the many theories that surround them.

If you have taken the time to read through the past or family pages of this shrine, then you will know that I am one of those people under the belief that Squall is Laguna's son. I am convinced that Square intentionally placed hints towards this through out the game knowing that some smart, observant fan would catch on and spread the news.

Below is some of the evidence which makes me believe that the above-stated is true. Much of it I didn't realize until I read up on it at Wikipedia.

    1. Laguna has the Squall card. Typically, a character's card is held by the person closest to them. Some examples are the Zell card, owned by his mother; the Selphie card, owned by her close friend; and the Rinoa card, owned by her father; to name just a few. One might expect that Ellone would possess the Squall card, but she does not. She has Laguna who, in turn, has Squall.

    2. Leon looks like Laguna. This evidence isn't particularly substantial as many of Square's characters share a similar appearance, however it is true. Leon, an older version of Squall featured in Kingom Hearts, has a striking resemblance to Laguna Loire, especially the way that his hair has grown out.

    3. There is a player-initiated scene during disc 3 in which it is indicated that Kiros and Ward knew Squall's parents well. While on the Ragnarok, talk to Kiros and he will say, "You look very much like your mother." to which Ward will respond, "Good thing you don't look like your father." The fact that they can say those things demonstrates that Kiros knew Squall's parents, and that Ward at least knew Squall's father. It is revealed during a dream sequence that Kiros has been to Winhill and knows Raine Loire.

Laguna responds to their comments with a "hey!", suggesting that he is the "father" that they were poking fun at, and proceeds to tell Squall, "Let's talk when it's all done. I have a lot to tell you... well, if you don't want to hear it, I'll understand." That sounds to me like something a father would say to his son who he has never been there for.

    4. During Squall's stay in the D-District prison, a group of moombas gather around him and exclaim "Laguna! Laguna! Laguna!". Laguna is known to have spent time with the Moomba's so I had always just assumed that it was because he and Squall shared a similar appearance. I was surprised to find out, however, after reading wikipedia, that it is explained in the main menu's information that Moombas remember people by licking their blood. Thus, Squall and Laguna must have similar blood.

After my first time through the game, I developed the impression that Laguna was nothing more than a bumbling idiot. After a few more times through, however, and some reading up at a few of my favourite character shrines, I have grown to become rather fond of him. Especially after I realized that he was father to my favourite character of all time.
