「 01. Purpose 」 Although the Great Deku Tree's assigned purpose is quite blatant, he is put in the game for more of a reason than just being another dungeon, or simply to guard the Koroks, etc. Described here is, what I believe, that purpose.First and foremost, the Great Deku Tree makes Link and the other Kokiri feel safe. This is not merely because he is the "Forest Guardian", but also because of his knowledge, wisdom, and experience. The Deku Children are not afraid because they know that if trouble comes along, their guardian will have a plan to outwit the enemy. They do not have to worry, because his knowledge will surpass that of their foes, and he will lead them to survival. That is why they are able to live so carefree in their small Kokiri abode. The Deku tree has lived for so long that he is most definately able to deal with the more trivial issues, however he is not afraid to admit when it is out of his, so to say, hands. This is shown when he calls upon Link to defeat Ganondorf. The Great Deku does not try to accomplish it on his own, because he is fully aware that he just can't do it. He uses his last bit of strength to pass on his wisdom to the future hero. Had the Great Deku tree not done so, Link would never have done what he was destined to do, and the beautiful land of Hyrule would be in shambles. At a young age, Link lacked a sense of self. He did not fit in with the Kokiri, but he knew no other race, nor lifestyle. He did not know that he was a Hylian, because he had never heard of a Hylian. He did not know why he didn't have a fairy, and he did not know why he grew old. Naturally, he would wonder about these thing's, and possibly feel as if a part of him is missing. The Deku Tree Sprout answers his questions, and puts that piece back into place. It would have been much more difficult for Link to have faced the journey to Hero-ism if he did not know who he was. It would be distracting, and frustrating, somewhat depressing. Link doesn't deserve to be upset. He is a Hero after all.
